680.700 One Medicine

Instructors: Dr. Joseph Mankowski, MCP Faculty and others.
Schedule: Fridays 1:00 – 2:00 pm during academic year in Darner Conference Room (Traylor G007).
Description: One hour seminars by JH faculty and outside guest speakers dealing with naturally occurring diseases of animals that relate to medical research and human disease, and with animal models of human disease.

680.703 Animal Pathology Laboratory

Instructors: Dr. Joseph Mankowski and MCP Faculty.
Schedule: Offered year round.
Prerequisites: DVM/VMD or equivalent, or special permission from course instructor.
Description:

Registration limited to experienced prosectors on the animal pathology diagnostic service. ACVP board certified faculty oversee rotations, and work one-on-one with postdoctoral (DVM or equivalent) fellows training for specialty board certification.Entails responsibility for gross and microscopic examination, and reporting for animals and tissues submitted for pathology by JH investigators, local veterinarians, zoo and aquarium collections, for advanced training in comparative pathology.

680.710 Clinical Conference in Laboratory Animal Medicine

Instructor: Dr. Jason Villano
Schedule: Fridays 9:00 – 10:00 am year round in Ross 403.
Prerequisites: DVM/VMD or equivalent, or special permission from course instructor.

Description: Weekly conferences in clinical laboratory animal medicine and clinical pathology. Attendance by comparative medicine and comparative pathology fellows is expected. The course is open to all other students, fellows and faculty.

680.711 Comparative Pathology Conference (Slide Conference)

Instructors: Dr. Kathy Gabrielson and MCP Faculty.
Schedule: Fridays noon – 1:00 pm year round in MRB 801.
Description:Weekly one hour slide conference focuses on case based  histopathology in a wide variety of animal species. Slides are available for study during the preceding week. Participants describe histology findings, give differential diagnoses, and discuss etiology and pathogenesis, immunohistochemistry, molecular and other diagnostic techniques, with the guidance of faculty members.

680.712 Phenotyping for Functional Genetics (Mouse Pathobiology and Phenotyping for Translational Research) 

Instructors: Dr. Brayton and others.
Schedule: Offered as a short course.
Description:This 1-week summer short course is intended for graduate students,  postdocs and others who work with mice. Three hands-on laboratory sessions include clinical and physical examination, specimen collection, and clinical and anatomic pathology.

ME:680.712 0001     is the 2 credit option with hands-on laboratory sessions;

ME:680.712 0002    is a 1 credit audit option to attend up to ~5 lectures.

JH faculty and other experts introduce concepts in mouse biology, pathology, genetics, phenotypes, and phenotyping, for translational research in multiple disciplines. OVERALL AIM : Achieve Rigor, Reproducibility, Validity, Translatability in research involving mice, using practical skills and resources, from the course for the humane and optimal use of mice and GEM in translational research.here.

680.713 Regulations that Govern Animal Research                                                                                                                                                                             

Instructor: Dr. Isabel Jimenez

Schedule: Thursdays 3:00 – 4:00 pm during academic year in Ross 403.

Description: Federal legislation dictates how scientists can use animals in research, and is supplemented by a number of guidelines that institutions must follow in order to receive NIH funds. This course systematically reviews the laws and regulations that govern animal research, and is especially suitable for veterinarians preparing to sit for the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine board exam and for members of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

680.714 Systems Pathology of Animals

Instructor: Dr. Cory Brayton

Schedule: Mondays 4:00 – 5:00 pm during academic year in MRB 801.

Description: This course focuses on material most relevant to ACVP anatomic pathology specialty board certification. Diseases are organized by system, including: alimentary, cardiovascular, endocrine, integument, musculoskeletal, nervous/ special senses, respiratory, and urogenital. Veterinarians pursuing specialty training in anatomic pathology are the target audience, but this course may be of interest to select pre-veterinary, veterinary and graduate students, research and veterinary technicians, and biomedical researchers.

680.715 Conversations on Research Animal Medicine and Management (CRAMM)

Instructor: Dr. Amanda Maxwell
Schedule: Mondays 3:00 – 4:00 pm during the academic year in Ross 403.

Description: This course will cover essential knowledge on the biology, husbandry, management, and medicine of animals in a research setting, and familiarize participants with common animal models for human disease. The lectures are geared towards veterinarians pursuing specialty training in laboratory animal medicine, but may be of interest to select preveterinary, veterinary, and graduate students, research and veterinary technicians, and biomedical researchers.

680.802 Journal Club for Laboratory Animal Medicine Board Review

Instructor: Dr. Jacqueline Brockhurst
Schedule: Fridays 4:00 – 5:00 pm year-round in Ross 403.

Description: Weekly journal club for Laboratory Animal Medicine Board review. Journals covered will be those pertinent to resident veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine, particularly recent articles that will be covered on the ACLAM board examination. Trainees are expected to read and present on 1 article per week to fulfill course requirements.

Description: Interactive, case/slide conference; emphasizes recent cases within and beyond JHU. Interesting cases and glass slides welcome!
